Benicio Del Toro landed an Academy Award for 2000’s “Traffic,” in which he played a conflicted police officer.
Most of the invites that pop into our inbox concern club nights in Essex featuring "special guest DJ and personality" Calum Best, so when we were invited to spend 24 hours in Barcelona with actual proper famous Benicio Del Toro courtesy of Magnum, we tried to be all cool and casual and nonchalant about it, but basically died of excitement.
The set-up was this: Benicio is the somewhat sexy face of the new Magnum Gold?!
(the punctuation is part of the name, just go with it) ice cream and, to promote this, he flew a load of journalists from around the world over to Barcelona, put us up in the super-swanky W Hotel, and then gave us a masterclass in Oscar-winning acting.
That's us at the end in the stupid hat, pretending to be a robber and saying "Bob's Diner, Knoxville" (we rehearsed our big moment approx 186 times).
What thankfully doesn't come across is the fact that we'd had four hours sleep after enjoying the hotel bar a little too much the night before. In case you're interested, Benicio was very friendly and had a painfully firm handshake.
This, teamed with the delicious free ice cream, helped cure our hangover. But sadly we don't think we'll be bothering cinema audiences with our sub-standard acting skills any time soon...Among many topics, the two spoke about their mutual love of Roger Deakins and Eddie Murphy. We always like news of new little people, so here’s it is.Kimberly Stewart – daughter of Rod (who an ex boyfriend used to say we looked like when we woke up in the morning – it was the hair – we hope) has huffed and puffed an iddy biddy baby girl into the universe. But seriously, doesn’t Benicio Del Toro look like Mr Pitt or his older brother at least?Thankfully Benicio hasn’t gone down the beaded-beardy path , so we still would.
