Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey was served a grand jury subpoena on Sunday night, shortly after the team’s road loss to the New England Patriots, related to the investigation into former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.Hernandez, Pouncey’s former college teammate, was charged with murder in June.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick, team owner Robert Kraft and two NFL players who were college teammates of Aaron Hernandez are among the more than 300 government witnesses who could testify at the Bristol native's murder trial, which is scheduled to open next month in Massachusetts.
Buffalo Bills linebacker Brandon Spikes and Miami Dolphins center James Michael Pouncey both attended the University of Florida with Hernandez, who was drafted by the Patriots in 2010.
Hernandez was released from the team in June 2013, hours after his arrest in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd.
Spikes has not been mentioned publicly in connection with the case, but Pouncey last year testified before a federal grand jury investigating Hernandez, who also faces five firearms charges, for illegal gun activity.
The Patriots have provided more than 300 pages of records from Hernandez's employment file to defense attorneys, and have turned over to investigators text messages between Hernandez and Belichick.
The names were included on a list of 305 potential witnesses whom prosecutors may call to the stand as they look to convince a jury that Hernandez shot and killed Lloyd in a North Attleborough, Mass., park less than a mile from his house in the early hours of June 17, 2013.
Loyd, a Dorchester, Mass., resident, had been dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins.
Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the June murder of acquaintance Odin Lloyd.
A former star tight end who signed a five-year, million contract in 2012, Hernandez was immediately cut after he was charged with murder.
After the arrest, Pouncey and his twin brother Maurkice, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, were photographed wearing “Free Hernandez” hats.
Maurkice Pouncey apologized for the incident, and Mike Pouncey refused to address the issue.
